Do I need to name them?
Ok, well I’m talking about weight watchers, liteneasy, tony ferguson, I could go on…
Why do they fail?
They are comprised of heavily processed foods (sometimes not even foods!) – laden with synthetic additives and preservatives,
The approaches taken do not encourage lifestyle change,
The weight loss that is experienced incorporates a high percentage of lean body weight (you probably want to keep this if you want to increase your metabolic fire and stay healthy!)
There is a very low ‘dieter’ adherence.
A 1 year study published in the Journal of the American Medicine Association (JAMA. 2005;293(1):43-53. doi: 10.1001/jama.293.1.43) reported that the dropout rate was: 21% @ 2months and 38% @ 6months. The most common reason cited for discontinuation was that the assigned diet was too hard to follow or not yielding enough weight loss.
Little wonder! Diets such as these deprive you of wholesome nutritious food and most probably social events as well! Not fun!!
So what is the best approach?
To have permanent and sustained weight loss you must make permanent changes in food choices, eating habits and exercise (the American College of Sports Medicine recognizes exercise as the greatest predictor of maintaining weight loss).
A good place to start would be undertaking an introductory 12 day detox (containing no pills or potions!) that incorporates safely and effectively into your weekly exercise routine.
