Nourish your mind with these simple actions

  • by

Our busy hard-working minds need just as much TLC as our bodies to stay healthy!

Take a moment to stop and give something back to your mind with two simple yet effective techniques.

Breathe!

Our breath is our life force and shallow breathing can leave us feeling uptight, restless, frazzled and tired.

Try this 1-minute breathing exercise to boost blood oxygen, calm and focus your mind and body.

It is a centering activity based on a slow inhalation and an incremental increase in the length of exhalations. It’s ok to have your eyes open and read as you do this. Once you get the hang of it you won’t need to refer to instructions.

Inhale to the count of two

Exhale to the count of two

Inhale to the count of two

Exhale to the count of three

Inhale to the count of two

Exhale to the count of four

Inhale to the count of two

Exhale to the count of five

Repeat several times, then return to your normal breathing.

If this feels too much for you right now just notice your breathe, feel it fill your body with energy and calm and slowly and steadily blow out stress and tension, then breathe in calm…..feel the tension flow from your body.

Just noticing your breath at any time is a good centring exercise to help you ‘tune up’ an out of sync mind.

Share positive feelings and thoughts of gratitude. Think of something that you really value about one of your family, friends, co-workers or clients and share the thought with them. ‘Kind words are short and easy to speak but have great weight.’
